Geoarchaeological excavations

An important part of the archaeological investigations at the Olympic Park was the geoarchaeological and palaeo-environmental investigations.

Examination of around 4,000 geotechnical borehole logs helped to build up an accurate picture of the soils, sediments and geological deposits that have helped shaped the evolving landscape of the Lea Valley.

In addition, to understand the changing environment, its vegetation and land use, samples of soil from river deposits and archaeological features were examined for pollen, charcoal and other plant remains, as well as insects, snails and other microscopic remains. These have shown not only how the environment affected people’s lives, but how people in turn irreversibly changed their environment.
